Ports can be divided into three broad categories any port from 0 through 1023 are all the Well Known ports that many classic protocols and web programs run on. Ports ranging from 1024 to 49151 are Registered Ports they are randomly assigned to certain devices and services when the services are running the port is open when the service ends the port normally closes. Ports above 49151 are usually where trojans and malware connect at, these are Dynamic/Private Ports and are usually not used by common programs these ports extend all the way up to 65535.
