Basic Commands
By now you should have learned to open the CMD (command) windows but if you've forgotten or skipped the first page then go to Start then Run then type in CMD you should get a basic black and white window where you can type in and read data.
The first command i'll teach you is Ping, ping is useful to check if a computer or server is online or not it is a very simple command to use simply type: Ping some website or IP goes here then simply fill in the underlined area with the website or IP address your interested in. If the connection times out the server is either offline or blocking your ping attempts if it returns with data like this example: Reply from 74.125.45.100: bytes=32 time=46ms TTL=53. Then the server or computer is online and in use.
Another command ill teach you is Netstat, netstat is good to easily check what ports are open on your computer and what they are doing the command is: Netstat -ano this shows you the ports on your computer and shows you what is connecting to you and from where.
Nbtstat is another good command to check for open remote ports use the command: Nbtstat -A Victim Ip Address Here so if you have a victim IP and want to do a very rudimentary port scan on his computer you can use that command.
Typing: telnet gains you access to telnet client and server setup that allows you to do things like remote connections and data copy and capture but note open telnet ports are extremely hard, if not completely impossible, to find anymore and only offer basic abilities to an intruder. There are many more higher tech ways to exploit access to a given system.
Also there is the option to use tracert followed by an IP address to backtrack where an IP address is connecting from.
All of these commands have further sub commands that can be seen by typing the command name such as nbtstat followed by help or a plain " ? " without quotes this page was just to show you the most basic computer tricks.
Another useful command is ipconfig or ipconfig/all it shows you your current IP address, dns servers, gateway masks and more.
